In the late 1940s, artist Norman Gulamerian found that he was unable to find quality artist’s linen in the U.S. and thus begun importing fine linen from Europe, and then later launched an art supply business alongside his brother Harold that they called Utrecht Linens, Incorporated. Their business was begun with a vision of providing only the best quality supplies for local artists. Their business began to grow rapidly, particularly after they successfully developed acrylic gesso that was useful for priming artist canvas.
