Safety Storage for Flammable Materials

Safely Storing Flammable Materials in Your Studio
Art studios are home to many flammable and hazardous materials. Accidental exposure is always a possibility. Many of the materials cause problems with skin, eyes and lungs. Irritation, breathing difficulties and even death may be the result of exposures. Artists should educate themselves about each material in their possession. They should learn how to properly handle, store and dispose of each one. In the following are some suggestions about safely storing hazardous flammable materials in your studio.

  • Place only compatible materials in storage together. Never place materials that could react with one another in the same area. You can check each materials label or MSDS for this information.
  • Solvents, acids, bases and other flammable materials should never be placed on the floor for storage. Never place these above head height for storage.
  • All materials should remain in their original containers. If placed in another container, be sure it is made of the same material as the original.
  • Never place materials in glass containers as these may break. Food or coffee containers should never be used for storing materials.
  • Any type of gas cylinder needs to be securely placed in an upright position. Protective valve cap should be in place at all times.
  • Hazardous flammable materials should remain closed except when material is being removed from container.
  • Never smoke, drink or eat in an area where these materials are used or stored.
  • Always wear protective eyewear, gloves and masks when working with hazardous flammable materials. Remove these items before leaving the work area.
Constant awareness of dangers and self protection practices will help you and others remain safe in your studio. Never allow children into your work area. Pets can suffer the effects of hazardous materials as well. Keep your work area free of clutter in order to prevent any accidents.
