Tips on How to Store Your Oil Paintings
Oil paintings are among some of the most beautiful creations that exist. For various reasons, it may be necessary to store oil paintings. Proper storage is imperative in their preservation. Improperly storing oil paintings may damage or destroy beautiful works of art. In the following, there are some tips on how to store your oil paintings.

  • Always inspect your paintings. You should remove any debris or dust.
  • Only store oil paintings in frames. Frames add protection to paintings. Those not in frames often are likely to chip, collect dust and debris or suffer bent edges.
  • Pad your framed paintings with polystyrene. It will serve as protection from scratches and dust for frame, canvas and paint.
  • Choose an adequate storage area. Areas used for storing oil paintings should be dark, dry and cool. There should be no danger of insects in the area as well. Insect droppings are acidic and will damage paint. Stable temperatures should be maintained to help in preventing decomposition of paint, mildew and fading. Never store in direct path of sunlight. Remember, storage areas should never have excess amounts of heat or cold as well as moisture or dryness.
  • Place paintings in storage area in an upright standing position.
  • Unframed artwork should have polystyrene place between each piece. Never place anything on top of paintings as dents and scratches are possible.
  • Be sure not to place a canvas painting against any sharp or pointed object. This will cause dents or even tears in canvas.
Oil paintings are best preserved if hung on a wall in your home, studio or office. Stored paintings should be taken out of storage as soon as possible. Always remember, oil paintings hung on walls should never receive direct sunlight.
