Overview of Screen Printing
Screen printing is thought to have first begun in Asia. In the process of screen printing, screens were first made from fine pieces of absorbent silk. Printing of this method first originated from a stenciling art form by the Japanese. Modern screen printing has since evolved through ideas that were adopted by John Pillsworth in 1914. He lived in San Francisco, California and was the first to reference screen printing in order to create multicolored items.
Screen printing techniques create an image of sharp edged color using a stencil and fabric material. Various materials can be used in the process. Clothing, caps, metallic items and other objects can be screen printed. Screen printing became very popular in the 1960’s. Today, screen printing continues to grow in popularity. Many crafters use it in fine art creations. Many commercial screen printers are common as well.
Patterns for screen printing can be created in several ways. Most commonly, patterns are created by the crafter’s hand. One designs a stencil by cutting a paper or film and fastening it to a screen. Others create an image onto the screen itself. Much talent is exhibited in the creation of stencils for screen printing. Creativity and imagination are greatly seen in all designs.
