Screen printing methods require a mesh or screen that is stretched securely around a sturdy casing. Those areas that are not to be printed upon must be blocked out on the screen. In order to create the print, screen is put on a sheet of dry paper or fabric. Ink is placed on top of dry material. A squeegee is used for spreading the ink in a consistent fashion across the screen. Ink passes through open areas of screen and onto the material below. This technique is best used in printing on flat surfaces.

Screen printing is a process of preparation, installation and orientation combined to create designs. There are certain quality tools and accessories that are required to perform the art. Some of these are knives such as scooping knives and those with multiple blades as well as scalpels. A large collection of inks for screen printing designs is also necessary. Blotting pens can be used to block any area that is not to be printed in the process. Spreading ink requires spatulas or squeegees with rubber blades. Screen printers need frames. To secure items many printers use clamps, tapes or staples. There are many different tools and accessories that will be needed. Required items will depend mainly upon the exact technique of screen printing that will be used.
Until a beginner in screen printing becomes skilled, they may want to invest in certain items to make easier work. There are precut stencils that are ready to use. Some kits are available that include manuals and materials for a project’s completion.
