What are Oil Sticks and What Benefits Do They Offer?
A great number of artists use oil sticks. These are simply oil paint that is available in stick forms. Oil sticks are often known as paint or pigment sticks. They are crafted of wax, refined pigments and linseed oil. One of the greater benefits of oil stick use is their easy usage. Other benefits include short drying times and their lack of strong odor emissions. Oil sticks are wrapped in a paper covering and keep artist’s hands clean. These are not allergenic or toxic.

Simple Use of Oil Sticks in Painting
Those using oil sticks for the first time in creating works of art should have some basic instructions. Proper usage often leads to better results and longer lasting paints. In the following are some simple instructions for beginners using oil sticks.

Oil sticks have a hard top that should be peeled away before they are first used. This hardened top will form after an oil stick has been stored for a period of time as well. Hard tops form as a protective barrier. It prevents the stick from becoming unusable. A knife or fingernail can be used in removing the hard top.
Oil sticks can be used on nearly any type of surface. Surfaces should first have a layer of white oil stick applied to them. This will give artists a surface that is easily blended, smooth and will hold a texture that is consistent while painting.
Oil sticks should be rubbed onto the surface until artists gain the desired color. Pointed objects can be used to etch or scribe the color immediately after it is applied. When dry, colors will have a creamy and smooth appearance.
White oil sticks are also used to apply over other colors in a piece of art. This diminishes the tones.
