Alkyds
What are Alkyds? Fatty acids and a certain type of alcohol are combined to make polyester resins known as an alkyd. Alkyds are in liquid form and are used in paints, enamels and varnishes. It acts as a binder to hold together other ingredients. Alkyds give ingredients the ability to bond to surfaces. Paints with alkyds have qualities that water soluble paints do not. Alkyd paints bond to wood, steel and other metals. Rust is often inhibited by using alkyd paints. Discolorations and stains can be easily covered as well. Alkyd paints have a thick consistency that allows brushes to pick up a greater amount. It spreads smoothly and evenly without clumping.

Alkyd Paint: Not Intended For Certain Surfaces
Although alkyd based paints can be used on many surfaces, there are some surfaces that are not desirable for application. Galvanized steel, masonry or concrete are a few of these undesirable surfaces. Chemicals in these surfaces react with the alkyds in a negative manner. Peeling and material damage are certain. Drywall is another surface where this type of paint is not recommended. It raise the nap if the drywall has not been primed using a latex paint.

Many accomplished artists use alkyd paints for creating their works. This type of paint dries more quickly than other oil paints. Paintings that are created using alkyd paints can be varnished quicker. Alkyd paints can also be mixed with oil paints on the same surface of a project.
