Tips for Glass Etching
Glass etching is simply the result of artistic carving on the surface of glass. It leaves a finish that is frosted white. Many windows and glass doors, bottles, vases and various dishes often are used in glass etching. Many use patterns for etchings such as flowers, shapes, images and monograms. There are some basic tips for glass etching. Some tips are briefly discussed in the following.
You should always thoroughly clean the surface with a soft cloth and quality glass cleaner.
Clear contact paper should be used to cover the surface. Make sure to remove all bubbles in the clear paper by pressing them out.
Place your selected design behind the glass to be etched.
For etching mirrors, place a sheet of carbon paper atop the clear contact paper. Put your design on top of the carbon paper. Trace your design. This will easily transfer it onto the contact paper.
A knife can be used to cut all contact paper away from areas to be etched.
All edges of the paper should be tightly stuck to the glass to be etched. There should not be any bubbles at all.
Etching cream should be liberally smeared in a layer onto the design area.
After the required time, generally around ten minutes, you can use cool water to rinse the etching cream away.
Follow by peeling the contact paper off and rinsing the glass with cool water as well.
Most glass etching artists use high quality materials in order to gain professional results. For your first or next etching project, you can choose top of the line items that will give better overall results.
