How to Dye Fabrics and Textiles
Dying fabrics and textiles can give a whole new look to the fabric, or can help you to coordinate your fabric more easily. While you can dye fabrics like our ancestors did – using natural things like tea (light brown), berries (pink) or onion skins (yellow), there are many fabric and textile dyes on the market that are quite a bit more efficient. Dying fabric is easy, and here’s how it’s done:
Wash the fabric that will be dyed. You will find instructions for washing the fabric on the box that the dye comes packaged in.
Mix the dye product according to package instructions. This may involve boiling the dye until it has reached a specific temperature and then allowing the dye to simmer.
Place the fabric into the pot with the dye. Stir it using a wooden spoon. Allow the fabric to remain in the pot for around five minutes.
Lift the fabric out.
Re-submerge it again, allowing it to remain for around five minutes longer.
Squeeze out any surplus liquid from the fabric. “Set” the dye as directed by the manufacturer’s instructions.
