Encaustic Painting Accessories

Encaustic Painting Accessories: For centuries (or millennia even) encaustic painting was undertaken with a spatula like poker called a rhabdion or cestrum, that was heated in a fire and was used to manipulate the encaustic paint. That’s not the case for modern encaustic painters. There are several encaustic painting accessories on the market that make working with encaustic paint easier than ever, including:

  • Heated spatula. The heated spatula comes with a variety of tips to shape, scoop, and smooth encaustic paint. You will also find electric hot tip pens that have different tips for smaller, more detailed work.
  • Electric pallet. This handy tool keeps the encaustic paint at the right temperature (anywhere between 160 and 220 degrees Fahrenheit) for the best performance.
  • Heat gun. Original encaustic painting required the use of a brazier or cauterium or torch for burning in. The heat gun has now replaced these archaic tools and is quite a bit more efficient.
