Create a Realistic Rust Patina in Minutes
If you’re looking to create the authentic look of rust, then Instant Rust and Instant Iron can help you achieve your goal. The following tips will help to create a real rust finish on any paintable surface. Keep in mind that you should begin with a clean surface that is ready for paint. If you are looking to add a rust patina faux finish to porous or unprimed objects, use a clear sealer or primer beforehand. To begin creating your faux finish:

  • Shake the bottle of Instant Iron vigorously. This will ensure that the metal particles in the faux finish Instant Iron are completely and evenly distributed. Use a disposable brush to apply the solution of Instant Iron. Allow the solution to dry and then apply another coat. Allow the second coat to dry until the tone that you reach with your faux finish is dark enough for your tastes. For a light orange faux finish of rust, allow to dry for thirty seconds or so. For a deep red faux rust finish, you may need to allow up to 24 hours of drying time.
  • Next, apply Instant Rust. Again, use a disposable brush. Within minutes of application, you will begin to see patches of rust. Rust will develop fully within a couple of hours. If you wish to see a deeper finish, then reapply the Instant Rust formula again.
  • If desired, you can add a light coat of sealer to protect your new faux finish. Keep in mind, however, that adding a sealant may change the color or texture of your newly rusted object.
  • Stand back and enjoy the antiqued look of your project! Creating faux finishes using Instant Iron and Instant Rust is fun and simple!
