Types of Decorative Painting Mediums: There are many different decorative painting mediums that can be used to make your project a big hit. The following are must-haves for decorative painting, and most of them are available in squeeze bottle containers that range in size from two to eight ounces:
Blending gel. Blending gel is a decorative painting medium that allows you to have more control over your paint without thinning it. Blending gel will keep your paint wet for a longer period of time so that you can blend, highlight, and shade. This is a great product for both sealed and unsealed surfaces.
Floating medium. This decorative painting medium never runs like water can and allows for easy floating of shades and highlights while drying quickly without an extender. This is an ideal medium for watercolor artwork.
This pure acrylic coating can be used as a surface "primer" to seal a wide variety of materials (including wood, metal, and glass) and to help the paint adhere better.

Glass and tile medium. This type of decorative painting medium is used to add “tooth” to many non-porous surfaces so that paint is easier to apply. Use this one glass or tile as well as plastic, candles, and tin.
Glazing medium. This type of medium is three products in one – a glaze that can be used for stains, faux finishes and antiques and can be used with acrylics for limitless color options.
Antiquing medium. This is the perfect medium for added a distressed or used look that makes your project look like it is much older than it is. Great for accessories and furniture.
Crackle medium. Again, adding a distressed look or time worn, weathered finish to projects is easy with crackle medium.
Eggshell crackle. This decorative painting medium gives works to create a finely crackled surface that is very much like cracked porcelain or glass. This product uses a two step process and can be used as a base coat or a top coat over top decorative painting.
Sealer. A very important decorative painting medium, sealer can create a smooth feel while removing grain, sealing pores, and cutting sanding time in half. This product is also available in a matte version.
