Acrylic mediums and additives have various uses. In this selection, artists will find additives for thinning and thickening their mediums as well as those for retarding the process of drying. There are various products in this line from industry leading manufacturers such as Blick, Golden, Jo Sonja and many more. One of these great products is Golden Acrylic Flow Release. These product aids in breaking water surface tension allowing it to more easily soak into surfaces that are porous. Artists using acrylic paint can get richer stains on the surfaces of their works. This is a wonderful medium for watercolor paper and canvases without primer. Another great item is Slow Drying Medium. This increases transparency and gives depth while keeping viscosity.
When thinning paint, artists can use water to thin acrylic paint. However, using excessive amounts of water will more than likely cause the paint to not bind and adhere to your surface. Most of these mediums have a milky appearance; but, when applied will dry clear without affecting your paint colors.
Artist can easily thicken paint by adding a medium. Paint will gain texture for easier application to your canvas or paper. Mediums for thickening can also be applied directly to the surface and then paint can be applied over the medium.
Mediums for retarding the process of drying will slow down the drying time giving a finished piece to have a much better appearance. Mediums of this type slow the amount of time that water evaporation from paint occurs.
