Professional Drafting Tables

Also known as a drawing board or architect's table, the professional drafting table is an all purpose desk that can be used for drawing with any larger than standard size drawing paper. Typically popular with the engineers and draftspersons out there, the professional drafting tables have been making their way into the artist's studios as they are proving quite versatile art equipment.

One of the great benefits to the professional drafting table is that it is completely adjustable. The artist can adjust the angle of the desk, so they don't have to constantly lean over their artwork, and they even can lay the table flat for those artists who deal with models and sculpturing. Choosing a Professional Drafting Table
Today’s market is literally overflowing with different professional drafting table options, making it a difficult task to narrow your choice down to just one. Whether you need a drafting table for writing, drawing, drafting, sketching, or some other purpose, you’ll find that there are literally dozens of choices. You will find draft tables made of either wood or steel, or both. When selecting a drafting table, ask yourself the following:

• Will you be using the table for a long period of time, or are you looking for a table for temporary use? For instance, you may want to choose a table that is for use for the interim as opposed to the long term, such as for using on a particular job site, or in a temporary apartment or dorm room. Select a short term table if you plan to use it for only a few years or less. A long term table is a high quality, well-built table that will be used a decade or longer.
• How big does the working surface need to be? What is the largest size paper that will be used on the table? A collapsible table may not accommodate larger paper.
• Does the table need to collapse or fold up in order for storage or will it remain assembled permanently? Short term type drafting tables are collapsible, or will fold up for easy transportation. If you live in cramped quarters, you may benefit greatly from a collapsible drafting table. A collapsible table features legs that fold together and a top that folds down. Most collapsible or portable drafting tables are quite sturdy but they do tend to feature a smaller work surface that doesn’t accommodate larger paper.
• Do you want to work at standard height, or drafting height? Drafting height is typically thought of as being around thirty-six inches from the floor. Desk height is only thirty inches. Most drafting tables that are meant for permanent installation are designed for you to sit at drafting height, while less permanent options are typically at desk height. There are some tables that can be used at both heights that have telescoping legs for that purpose.
