Art Stools

One of the artist's most used "tools" is the art stool. While many pieces are created in a seated position, when the artist is standing for long periods of time drawing or painting, an art stool is provided to give the artist time to rest his or her legs while still able to work. Unlike a chair, the art stool is high enough so when the artist sits down, he or she will not have to readjust if they were working at the top portion of the canvas. Usually the actual seat of the art stool sits at about waist height, and no arm supports are included because it gives the artist the freedom to continue to work if he or she desires.

Art stools are also ideal for the artist who has a foot or leg injury. Allowing them to sit high, the art stool takes the pressure off of the leg and allows the artist to continue painting or drawing. Some stools even come with a back support for those artists who suffer from lower back pain. Also, these art stools can also be used in conjunction with artist work benches as they typically sit higher up than standard tables.

Selecting the Right Artist’s Stool
A stool is an important tool for most artists or those who work on a drafting table. Choosing the right stool can make all the difference between being comfortable as you work and create – or being uncomfortable and ending up with a bad back. When selecting the right artist’s stool, keep the following in mind:

  • Think comfort first. If you aren’t comfortable, you’re not going to be focused on the job at hand. And being uncomfortable is a sure sign that your back, neck, and shoulders may become injured, particularly if you plan to use the stool for extended periods of time.
  • Look for pneumonic lift function. While many artists prefer just a basic wooden or steel artist’s stool, if you choose a stool with a pneumonic lift, you can easily adjust the height of the stool to your specific needs.
  • Go for the sturdiest stool you can find. Invest in a stool that will last for many years. Buying a flimsy stool can save you a few dollars in the “here and now” but you will end up replacing the stool more quickly. A better idea is to spend a few more dollars and end up with a stool that will last and provide you with enhanced functionality.
