24,000, Pen and Ink on Paper, 52.5x42 Inches (15 Drawings)
Twenty-four thousand individuals die each day of hunger-related causes according to The Hunger Project, a global organization committed to the end of world hunger. In an effort to represent this overwhelming statistic in a visual form, I have drawn a circle for each of the 24,000 individuals. It is difficult for the mind to conceptualize the scope of 24,000, or for that matter, any extreme number. The process of drawing each circle has given me a sense of the vast number of those who die each day. It also serves as an atypical approach to presenting this staggering statistic into something the viewers of my piece can grasp visually. My goal is to create a greater understanding of the significance of international poverty and hunger. The process of drawing 24,000 circles is as important as the final presentation. Slave labor, sweatshop factories, 12-14 hour workdays, pitiful wages, and deplorable working environments go hand in hand with world hunger and poverty. The repetitiveness of drawing circle after circle was a means for me to relate to the monotonous working conditions of millions of people internationally on a daily basis. After I visited several factories in China, the process of drawing these circles was a very personal endeavor. International poverty is an undeniable reality we often overlook as a culture. Through my work I hope to heighten the awareness of the disadvantaged.
