Kiln Safety and Ventilation

Safety Precautions When Using a Kiln
Many beginning crafters and potters are often severely burned by coming into contact with a pottery kiln. Pottery kilns reach extreme temperatures. They are designed to fire clay pieces until hardened. Insulated gloves and mittens should be worn when contact with hot surfaces on an operating kiln are possible.

Other safety tips are discussed in the following.

  • Kiln operators should wear dark safety glasses to protect their eyes. Individuals use kiln peep holes to look inside of kilns. Ordinary glasses do not defend eyes against bright light and excessive heat.
  • Very dangerous fumes are emitted by kilns. Correct ventilation is a must when kilns are installed. All kilns must be vented to the outdoors. Skin and lung irritation or damage is possible if contact with fumes is made. Some fumes may even be fatal.
  • Proper installation of a kiln is imperative to its safety and performance. It is highly recommended that installation is performed by a heating contractor. Contractors can perform checks on ventilation.
  • Avoid risk of fire by never placing anything on top of or near the kiln. This can trigger incineration.
  • Never allow children or pets into an area where there is a kiln. This could be dangerous or deadly.
