What is a Pottery Kiln?
By definition, a pottery kiln is an oven or furnace that is used in heating pottery to extreme temperature to make a product that is hard. During firing, heat changes the clay’s chemical structure. Results will vary with the use of each kind of kiln due to the source of heat and atmosphere within. Kilns are well insulated to help in temperature control and atmosphere. There are intermittent and continuous kilns. Continuous kilns are most seen in industrial areas and are never cool. Intermittent kilns are used by potters, crafters and hobbyists. They are heated and cooled many times.
These may remain cool for days and even weeks. A brief description of gas and electric kilns is given in the following.
