Basic Kiln Safety
Basic safety precautions make ceramic pottery kilns quite safe for use. Safety precautions must be followed as they have many dangers. High temperatures and volatile gas emissions are a few of the dangers. There are some vital tips for safely using a ceramic pottery kiln in the following.
Properly insulated kilns can become very hot. Individuals may be seriously burned if they touch bare skin to surfaces of kilns. Potters should wear kiln mitts or gloves for touching any area of a kiln. Recently used kilns will remain hot for hours after use. Never open or touch a kiln that has not had time to thoroughly cool. Avoid damage to eyes by wearing protective eyewear when looking into spy holes on kiln.
Ventilation is a must. Kilns should be well vented or place outdoors. Firings release gases that are irritants to the lungs and body. Some may be lethally toxic. Each kiln will have detailed instructions for ventilation. These should be strictly followed. Electric kilns should only be installed by a certified electrician. Never place anything on the top of kiln. Leave a foot of space around entire kiln. Make sure to always turn kiln vent or hood on before loading. This will avoid exposure to any dust from ceramic glaze.
Never use kiln in a wet area.
Never allow children or pets near a kiln that is hot.
During firing, never open kiln door.
Never leave a fuel burning kiln unattended for any length of time.
Always turn off electric circuit before plugging or unplugging an electric kiln. Make sure electric kilns are unplugged before making any necessary repairs. Check to see that all kiln switches are turned off before unloading or loading kiln as well.
