Clay Extruders

What Is a Clay Extruder?
Many describe a clay extruder as a hopper that has a press and several dies. This device presses clay into different shapes or patterns. Most extruders are wall mounted in studios. Others are table models and there are even some that are as large as a small car. Extruders are not necessary but beneficial for making even strips of clay for pottery crafting.

Some general suggestions for using a clay extruder are in the following.

  • Before beginning, decide how much clay is needed. You should double that amount and knead clay with hands for about 20 minutes. Make sure to work all of the bubbles and air from the clay. Form a cylinder shape that is one slimmer than the hopper of your clay extruder.
  • Remove extruder’s bottom by unscrewing. Place chosen die into place. Replace bottom of extruder and tighten. Most dies are rectangle, square and circle shaped. Other unique shapes can be found on the market today.
  • Move piston on extruder’s top up and out of hopper area.
  • Place cylinder in hopper and replace piston. Move ring until lever is ground level and pull down lever. This may need to be repeated until clay begins to come from extruder’s bottom.
  • Once clay is desired length, pinch it off and move to work area.
  • Pull lever down until piston is at extruder’s bottom to empty. Remove bottom of extruder and die.
