Underglaze Colors

What is Underglaze?
Potters use underglaze for creating patterns and designs that will show up through the glaze that is applied. This give the surface of pottery enhanced visual depth and uniqueness. Any type of design or decoration applied to a surface on pottery before applying glaze is known as underglaze. Stains, slips and some other products are thought of as underglaze.

There are two main types of underglaze. In the following, these underglaze types are:

  • One of the most popular of all underglaze is opaque. It has a content high in clay. Opaque produces opacity that is very close in characteristics to engobe.
  • Another type of underglaze is often called one stroke. It has many names on the market today. It has a content that has less clay. One stroke underglaze also offers greater color concentration than opaque. This type of underglaze is preferred for crating fine lines or details that need bold color in a stroke.
Underglaze is available in liquid or powder form. Many potters choose powder form as it is more economical for completing a lot of projects. It is simply mixed with water. For use with a brush, mineral oil, glycerin or gum tragacanth is often added.
