Wood and Hardboard Panels

Masterpieces on Painting Panels
Painting panels are made of wood. They are used alone as a single work of art or in groups of more than one that are joined together. Before canvas became the popular medium, painting panels were widely used by artists. Some artists purchase larger sheets of wood and have them cut at lumber yards to meet the needs of their projects. You can also purchase painting panels that are precut and shaped as you desire. Painting panels are rather inexpensive and allow for a surface that is rigid. There is less chance of cracking than with the use of a canvas. One disadvantage is that oils or acids from the board may seep into the painting. This may cause the paint to have a yellowing effect. The proper primer can prove to be beneficial in keeping this from occurring. Gesso is highly recommended.

To prepare painting panels for your art, try some of the following suggestions:

  • Provide the lumber yard or retailer with the size of painting panels that you will need.
  • Thoroughly sand the board thoroughly. If it not sanded the primer will not adhere.
  • Gesso should be applied to the painting panel.
  • Shake the gesso well to ensure proper mixture.
  • Use an old wide brush for applying the primer. Older brushes tend to have no loose hairs that can become a nuisance.
  • Start applying the primer at the top of the panel. Apply in strokes from one edge to another.
  • Apply three coats of gesso to the painting panel. Between coats, you should sand away the rough spots. This makes for a much smoother surface to begin your artwork.
  • Prime the back of the painting panel and the sides. This will protect the panel from any moisture that it may be exposed to.
Most artists find that the more coats of primer that are applied; the brighter and more vibrant the colors of their paintings will be. Painting panels are used widely around the world by accomplished and beginning artists.
