Traditional Profile Cotton Canvas

Traditional Profile Cotton Canvas and Your Art:  Choosing the proper canvas for your art can be a task in itself. There are so many types of canvas available on the market today. Price ranges vary from the affordable to the very expensive. The higher quality of canvas provides for more durability in the years to come. Many of the cheaper canvases will allow the color to fade into the fibers. Synthetic fibers in other canvases let the color sit atop them. This makes scratching and cracking inevitable. Many artists prefer to use the traditional profile cotton canvas. It has a unique quality of promoting bold colors and gives longevity to any work of art. It has archival qualities as well. Many artists prefer to prime their traditional profile cotton canvas themselves.

A rather easy task, priming can be done by anyone but mostly done by accomplished artists. Some easy suggestions for priming are in the following:

  • Stretching of the canvas should be done before priming begins.
  • Sanding of any rough spots can easily be performed using a nail file or sandpaper.
  • Always shake your primer, such as gesso, very well. Your priming efforts will be harmed if the primer is not completely mixed by rapid shaking.
  • Use an older brush that is clean for applying primer. Older brushes are less likely to have loose hairs. If you are using a decorating or new brush, you should wash it several times to get rid of any loose hairs.
  • Always start at the top of your canvas when applying the primer. You should work from one edge to the other. This gives a smoother appearance.

After you have applied a coat of primer, allow it to dry before adding another. Between coats you may want to sand the canvas smooth again. This provides you with an exceptional work surface for your traditional profile cotton canvas.
