Oil Primed Linen Canvas

A Look at Oil Primed Linen Canvas: Many artists prefer the oil primed linen canvas. Oil primed linen canvas provides an excellent work surface for oil paints. Oil painting is a classic hobby for many and a form of expression for others. Oil primed linen canvases give a beautiful surface for creating a work of art.

When purchasing oil primed linen canvas, you should think about your needs. You may want only a pre-stretched canvas for the project you are about to begin. For future needs or larger projects, choose from several yards or a roll of oil primed canvas. There are two main techniques for fastening your canvas. These are briefly discussed in the following:

  • You may choose to spline fasten your canvas. This technique utilizes vinyl cording to attach the canvas to a pre-cut channel in the back of your frame. It tightly holds the canvas with a very contemporary look that will hang flatly against any surface.
  • Some artists prefer to use the back stapling technique to fasten their canvas. The canvas is secured snuggly to the frame backing with staples. Most staples are coated to prevent rusting. This is a great technique to use if re-stretching the canvas is a future possibility.

A large number of artists prefer to stretch their own canvases. They often consider this as part of the art. It seems generic if they have not completed the whole piece including the canvas stretching. Other artists use only pre-stretched canvases for creating their art. Frames for stretching canvases can be purchased in different sizes or for the DIY artists; they can be hand-made. It is best and recommended to begin stretching at the middle of the canvas then work outwardly. This provides a smoothly stretched canvas. If your canvas is not to your liking, simply remove and start again. Practice makes for a perfectly stretched canvas.
