Bristle Brushes

What are the Differences between Bristle Brushes, Hair Brushes, and Synthetic Brushes for Artists? Choosing the right brush for the right task is important to creating a beautiful painting or other work of art. The most important part of the paint brush is its tuft, which is the section of the brush that carries the paint and is used to apply it to your canvas or other working surface. You will find tufts made from bristle or natural hair or synthetic materials – or even a combination of the two.

Bristle brushes are made with bristles, which are coarse fibers found on the skin of a hog, camel or other animal. (Gross, huh?) Bristle brushes are technically classified as natural hair brushes, but they are stiffer than any type of hair, which makes them the perfect brush to manipulate some of the heavier paints that you might be working with. You might hear bristle brushes referred to as hog bristle, signet, natural bristle, Chinese bristle, white bristle, or black bristle brushes. So while technically not “hairs” the bristles that are found on certain animals can make a great brush for certain applications. The bristle brush is excellent for oil and acrylic painting. The stiff tuft of a bristle brush makes it ideal for pushing heavy acrylic or oil around on your canvas. The bristle brush is super resilient and has split ends (also called flags) at the tip that gives it its ability to hold heavier paint.
