Staedtler

In the history of Nurembergs pencil, the name of Staedtler is commonplace. In 1835, J.S. Staedtler founded a factory for making pencils within the city walls of Nurembergs. Even before founding the factory, this family had been handcrafting pencils for many generations. Some of the earliest history shows that the pencil had been made since 1662. Friedrich Staedtler was noted in the city annals as being a pencil craftsman. However, J.S. Staedtler turned this small workshop into a large factory.

During October of 1835, J.S. Staedtler gained municipal council permission to begin producing pastel pencils, black lead pencils and red chalk. By 1840, his company was producing over sixty different variations of the pencil. During 1866, Staedtler employed around fifty-five individuals. Soon after in 1880, L. Kreutzer took over the company. It was relocated during 1898 to the city’s Johannis district. Dr. Rudolf Kreutzer soon joined the company and began traveling to North America and Asia in order to expand the trade of pencils around the world.

Many of the higher quality products were developed under the management of Dr. Kreutzer. He remained in control of the company until 1967. Staedtler North America, a subsidiary in Canada, was formed in 1960. Today, the North American offices and distribution facilities are situated in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Staedtler remains the leading manufacturer of instruments for writing, drawing and coloring around the world. This company also produces polymer and modeling clays.

Staedtler takes pride in knowing that when their customers reach for a tool to write, draw or scribble, they reach for their fine products. Each product from Staedtler is a help tool for the promotion of creative skills. Staedtler instruments for writing are comfortable in the hand and offer varying features making them the favorites of many.
