Saunders Waterford

Artists love the artist papers that are manufactured by Saunders Waterford, an English brand that is made by St. Cuthberts Mill, which can be found in Somerset’s Axe Valley.  This is one of England’s earliest paper-making mills.  The mill’s current operations make use of computerized systems to produce high quality and consistent paper.  The mill is a subsidiary of the Invernesk Group, and producing paper that is retailed by brands like Winsor & Newton, among others.
Saunders Waterford artist papers are beloved by watercolorists around the globe.  These papers combine a tougher surface with features of other Saunders papers.  The sheets are made by mould and are crafted completely of cotton.  The paper has been surface sized and internally sized with gelatin, and feature acid free construction with two natural deckle edges.  One deckle edge bares the watermark of T H Sunders England while the trademark of Waterford Series can be found embossed in the corner.

The paper has a fairly loud and bright rattle, which is a strong indicator that the pulp for the paper was well-pounded, an important part of the paper making process.  This paper is available in rolls or sheets in several formats, and in six different weights.

Many people prefer the rough finish of this paper to any other.   It is among the coarsest of any available, and features a low relief rounded tooth.  Waterford sheets are typically excellent for limited-lifting techniques and washes.  These sheets offer an advantage of solid dependability, and the cool colors against the ivory of the paper offer an ideal work surface for landscapes, figures and portraits.
