Most artists have sandpaper from Norton in their studios for sanding during priming of canvases. When Gesso is applied to a raw canvas, it must be sanded between each layer after being allowed to dry. A bit of water is added to the Gesso to dilute it so that it is more easily applied. Gesso is applied in a thin layer and additional layers are added to gain a surface that is more absorbent. If applied to thickly, the surface will more than likely crack. After each layer has completely dried, sandpaper is used to smooth the dried primer. Sanding will leave a fine dust on the surface which will get caught in the next layer of primer. This layer of dust should be cleaned off with a clean, soft cloth that is damp. Regardless of how many layers that you sand, you should always clean the sanding dust off in this manner.
