For those who love creating beautiful pieces of pottery, choosing the right one can be rather overwhelming especially for beginners. There are basically three pottery categories requiring pottery clay use which are porcelain, earthenware and stoneware. Clay used in pottery is usually kiln baked using intense degrees of heat in a process called firing. This process causes the clay to become hard in form. Kiln firing not only hardens clay but can be used to glaze and color pottery items.

One common clay known as earthenware contains an ample amount of iron. This type of clay is generally fired at low temperatures and will retain a porous state. Major types of earthenware clays include majolica, faience and delft. Porcelain pottery is crafted from a mix of various types of minerals and clays. Ball clay, kaolin, flint and feldspar are the common ingredients in this type of pottery clay. Porcelain must be fired at extremely high heat. After being fired, porcelain gains a white, translucent appearance that is nonporous.

Ball clay is only found in certain places worldwide making it a rare mineral. This type of clay has a very fine grain; much finer than firing clay. During firing, ball clay will shrink tremendously. Kaolin is usually mixed with ball clay in order to reduce the amount of shrinkage. Kaolin is also known as kaolinite. This is a pure, clay mineral that is white in color. Kaolin is mostly used along with other types of clay.
